Just because no one notices our effort doesn't mean it isn't a good thing or best for us, and just because others take selfish advantage also doesn't mean it isn't good for us- or isn't bad for them in the long run. The easiest way to lose friends and other things is to take and take and take, and to play those friends for altruistic fools. You are totally right.
